The PTUs are mounted adjacent to the flight crew near the side window. Each PTU is installed on a window mounting, suitably placed so that it does not restrict access or egress via the side window. The main screen of the PTU provides the user interface to the system and an overview of the mission. The overview consists of mission details in the form of the flight and aircraft registration numbers, date, route and flight sectors, and an indication of the data load currently in the system. The AMDS includes its own flight planning application to support flight operation. The device provides the systems capability for onboard compilation of the flight crew briefing package, updated data set, construction and dispatch of the flight plan to Air Traffic Services (ATS) and to the airline AOC, facilitating fuel orders, load sheets, and performance calculations. Operating costs are able to be reduced further through the carriage and use of electronic manuals and documents. A considerable amount of back office work is able to be eliminated to maintain manuals and documents in a condition suitable for flight operations, but enhance overall document management and quality control. The PTU stores, displays and has a comprehensive search engine for airline manuals and documents. These include Standard Operating Procedures and technical documentation, and Route Manuals, including maps and charts. Safety is enhanced by incorporating electronic page checking across the document range; ensuring the content list is current and correct. Updates to the onboard document set are easily achieved during maintenance cycles or as part of a daily data load if there is high priority information to be exchanged or updated. Flight crews are alerted via the inbuilt notification systems in the AMDS. Bulk data uploads and downloads are provided to and from the airborne part of the AMDS via the Flight Crew Pilot Portal, and during maintenance activities. The Pilot Portal forms one of the linkages between the ground and the airborne systems. The AMDS is “wireless ready” to enable a wireless broadband connection to the aircraft when it is parked. The airborne component of the AMDS solution gathers an incremental compilation of data and information derived from en route progress reports and other data entered by the flight crew into a flight Voyage Report. The Voyage Report contains airline specific data and information required for regulatory compliance, and is downloaded into the airline system for analysis and corrective action should this be required.
